Rudy Giuliani just took Mike Pompeo down with him
Not only are Donald Trump and his advisers stuck with no viable way to fight back against an unraveling criminal scandal, they’re each faced with the reality that they’re one Rudy Giuliani tweet away from going down. This week we saw Rudy tweet a text message exchange he’d had with the State Department’s Kurt Volker, which resulted in Volker resigning and agreeing to testify against everyone. Now Rudy has decided to go after Volker’s boss.
This morning Rudy Giuliani hit the cable news circuit and once again asserted that he was working with Volker on the Ukraine plot. But then Rudy took things further and asserted that while Secretary of State Mike Pompeo didn’t instruct him to carry out the Ukraine plot, Pompeo knew full well what was going on at the time.
The thing about Rudy Giuliani is that he’s going to prison for the rest of his life unless he can demonstrate that he wasn’t acting as a lone wolf when he plotted with Ukraine against the United States, and that he was instead acting under instruction from the U.S. government. The thing is, that’ll only hold up in court if Rudy can prove it. He’s already shown that he has text message exchanges with the State Department. Even though Rudy is a frequent liar, it seems likely that he wouldn’t bother to implicate Pompeo unless he has the receipts to prove it.
In any case, Rudy Giuliani has just handed the House impeachment inquiry all the leverage when it comes to the subpoena it just sent Mike Pompeo over Ukraine documents. Pompeo will now have to make a quick decision about whether he wants to try to remain loyal to Team Trump, knowing that Rudy could take him down at any minute, or if he wants to cooperate with the impeachment inquiry in the hope it’ll save him from getting indicted after this is all over.
