Judge Merchan just shot down Donald Trump’s last chance
One thing we keep seeing play out: if you’re a defendant and you’re looking to delay your trial, the time to do that is early on in the process. Once the judge finally sets a firm trial date, the defendant’s remaining nonsense motions tend to get shot down in real time, and the trial tends to start on the scheduled date no matter what.
That’s why it was such a big deal once Judge Merchan set April 15th as a firm start date for Donald Trump’s New York criminal trial. At that point there was likely nothing Trump could say or do to delay the trial, not even by a day.
Sure enough, Judge Merchan shot down Trump’s last ditch delay tactics today, and the trial remains on track to begin on April 15th. It’s a reminder that while Trump does have some two-bit antics, he doesn’t have a “magic delay wand” for delaying things to his liking. Trump wasn’t able to keep his New York criminal trial from happening, and now it’s happening in just twelve days.
