John Kelly just made things even worse for Donald Trump
Just about everything that can go wrong is going wrong for Donald Trump right now. State Department officials are coming out of the woodwork to testify about his impeachment crimes. Trump’s former ally Don McGahn is finally coming forward to testify against him. Now another ghost from Trump’s past, John Kelly, is suddenly coming back to haunt him.
In the latest sign that the floodgates of history are now wide open against Donald Trump and no one wants to end up on the wrong side of it, former White House Chief of Staff John Kelly is now trying to wash his hands of the whole thing. Kelly asserted during a conference today that his departure and the subsequent lack of adult oversight led Trump to make the kinds of decisions that have gotten him impeached.
This isn’t playing well – at all – for John Kelly. If his intent was to paint himself as the would-be hero who kept a rogue president from going completely off the deep end, it’s not working. Instead, most observers on social media are interpreting this as Kelly saying that if he’d stuck around, Trump’s ongoing crime spree would have remained at the kind of just-barely-restrained levels that would have allowed Trump to keep getting away with it all.
John Kelly isn’t helping himself with any of this. He had several chances to do the right thing, and it’s too late for him to simply wash his hands of it at this late date. But whatever his self-serving intention may be, Kelly is definitely making things worse for Donald Trump. Kelly is acknowledging that Trump is a maniacally out of control criminal, which is the last thing that Trump needs as the pro-impeachment poll numbers continue to rise.
