Joe Biden just got the best news of all
In the very brief window between South Carolina and Super Tuesday, a pair of polls were conducted which showed Joe Biden having climbed very slightly into first place nationwide. This was before anyone dropped out and endorsed him. It was before the Super Tuesday dominance that set him on his current wave of momentum. Because of the timing, few noticed that Biden had already become the frontrunner heading into Super Tuesday.
This is important because, even with roughly one-third of the delegates in this race now having been awarded, national poll still tell us who the frontrunner is, because two-thirds of the country hasn’t voted yet. Biden has a modest lead in delegates right now. Sanders will cut into it if they ever finish counting the mail-in ballots in California. But regardless of which of the two of them ends up with the most delegates coming out of Super Tuesday, that doesn’t tell us how things are likely to go in upcoming states. To know what the upcoming states are thinking, you have to look at the nationwide polls.
In the four national polls that have emerged since South Carolina, Joe Biden has an average national lead of 7.5 points. All of these polls included Klobuchar and Buttigieg, who dropped out on Monday. But in the only new poll that’s also omitted Bloomberg, who dropped out on Wednesday, Biden has a double digit national lead.
Reuters now has Joe Biden thirteen points ahead of Sanders nationwide. This poll does still include Warren, who dropped out this morning. But second-place polling suggests that Warren’s support may be divided roughly evenly between Biden and Sanders. If this proves true in other upcoming polls, it’ll mean that Biden really is ahead of Sanders by double digits. This race is exploding in Biden’s favor by the day.
