Joe Biden has something up his sleeve

As I was watching one prominent Democrat after another line up behind Joe Biden this evening, I couldn’t help but be impressed at how quickly the mainstream left has coalesced behind him. And he clearly has even more prominent endorsements coming that we don’t know about yet, because momentum begets momentum. But something stood out tonight that was far bigger than the endorsements.

When Amy Klobuchar took the stage tonight, Joe Biden made a point of saying that Klobuchar beat him during the debates. When Pete Buttigieg took the stage tonight, Biden said that Pete reminded him of his beloved late son Beau. When Beto O’Rourke took the stage, Biden lavished him with praise for his work on gun control.

These are the rising all-stars of the left, and Joe Biden knows it. He’s not trying to outshine them. He’s trying to promote them. He’s not up there trying to paint himself as the be-all and end-all of everything. He’s clearly going to use all of these people on his team. He wants to be surrounded by strong people.

Sure, Joe Biden can be arrogant when it’s necessary, such as when he destroyed Paul Ryan in the 2012 vice presidential debate. But at his core, Biden is a humble man. He’s not trying to make it all about himself. He’s not trying to be a cult of personality. It’s a welcome contrast to the current political landscape. Joe Biden is the unifying figure we need right now – and that’s what he has up his sleeve.
