One of the key overlooked aspects of congressional hearings is that they make guilty parties nervous, and often prompt them to make mistakes. There’s nothing better for a congressional probe, for instance, than when a hostile witness gets caught lying during testimony โ€“ because the resulting threat of criminal prosecution can then be used to pressure that witness into coming clean about everything.

Sooner or later, Jim Jordan is going to end up being subpoenaed to testify to the January 6th Committee about his interactions with Donald Trump on that day. He can’t simply defy such a subpoena, unless he wants to face criminal contempt prosecution from the DOJ, a la Steve Bannon. As the committee proceedings are advancing, Jordan is tripping himself up already.

For instance, Jordan previously told Politico that he spoke with Donald Trump by phone during the January 6th attack. Now Jordan has claimed during today’s hearings that he did not speak with Trump during the attack. So he’s either lying now or he was lying before โ€“ and he’s lying about the most crucial aspect of his actions that day.

This means that when Jim Jordan is forced to testify as a witness, he’ll have to decide which version of his story to go with โ€“ and he’ll then be forced to explain why he keeps changing his story. To that end, the January 6th Committee will have Jordan’s phone records to prove precisely when Jordan had phone calls with Trump. This all sets up a no-win scenario for Jordan, which likely explains why he’s already behaving in panicked fashion.
