Roger Stone associate Jerome Corsi is negotiating a Trump-Russia plea deal. Here’s what it really means.
Far right conspiracy theorist and Roger Stone associate Jerome Corsi announced earlier this month that Robert Mueller had informed him he was just days away from being indicted and arrested in relation to the Trump-Russia scandal. But Corsi’s arrest never came, and the story went cold. Now we know why: Corsi began negotiating a plea deal with Mueller instead. So how does this impact Trump-Russia?
According to Jerome Corsi, he’s only being charged with perjury. But he’s alleged to have been a go-between for Roger Stone and WikiLeaks during the 2016 election, which would have put him at the center of one of the primary avenues for Trump-Russia collusion. For starters, if Corsi’s plea deal is finalized – and the Washington Post says it’s still being hammered out – he can give up Roger Stone – which would be the final nail in Stone’s indictment coffin.
In fact Corsi’s impending plea deal could be the only reason Stone hasn’t been arrested yet, as Mueller could be planning to quickly bring Corsi back before the grand jury to sell out Stone, thus making the Stone indictment more bulletproof. The question is who else Corsi can give up. What did he learn from Stone about the Trump campaign’s overall collusion with Russia? And the bigger question is, if Corsi is flipping on Stone, will that force Stone to flip on Donald Trump? They have a sketchy shared personal history that goes back four decades.
Back when it first became clear that Jerome Corsi was either going to have to flip on Roger Stone or go to prison, Palmer Report pointed out that Stone had rather interestingly not said a word about Corsi. This stood in sharp contrast to Stone’s usual habit of either viciously attacking on Instagram, or passionately defending, his various associates who have been hauled before the grand jury. We interpreted Stone’s silence as a sign that he fears whatever Corsi has on him. To this day, Stone still hasn’t mentioned Corsi.
