Rick Perry is best remembered for going on Dancing With The Stars, for resigning from the Trump administration in the midst of the Trump-Ukraine scandal, and for forgetting the names of some of the government agencies he wanted to eliminate – not necessarily in that order. Now Perry may end up being remembered for something far darker.

The January 6th Committee is telling CNN tonight that it believes the infamous text message sent to Mark Meadows the day after the 2020 election, which pushed for the election results to be overthrown, came from Rick Perry. Interestingly, Perry’s people are denying that the text came from him, even though CNN has confirmed that the text message is from a phone number that is associated with Perry.

This leaves only two possibilities. One is that Rick Perry is innocent, which would suggest that he’s being framed by someone who hijacked or spoofed his phone number. The other is that Rick Perry is guilty and lying about it. Time, and the evidence, will ultimately reveal which of these two scenarios is the case.

Notably, when the January 6th Committee began making these kinds of text messages public earlier this week but kept the identities hidden, we pointed out that this was likely a tactic for getting the people in question to panic and screw themselves. Sure enough, Jim Jordan quickly identified himself as the author of one of the text messages, because he wanted to dispute the placement of a period. And now the committee is leaking that it believes another of the text messages is from Rick Perry, prompting him to issue an instant denial. If Perry is lying about this, then he’s just made an even bigger mess for himself.
