January 6th Committee is indeed going after House Republicans’ phone records
Awhile back it was reported that the January 6th Committee was “considering” going after the phone records of House Republicans who are suspected of having communicated with the insurrectionists before and/or during the Capitol attack.
At the time this led to a lot of hand wringing on social media about why they were only “considering” doing so. But Palmer Report explained that this was merely the kind of incremental language that politicians use in order to make sure they don’t look overly partisan in the eyes of voters in the middle, and that of course they were going to seek those phone records.
Sure enough, it’s now being confirmed that the January 6th Committee is indeed seeking House Republicans’ phone records. Moreover, legal expert Norm Eisen thinks the committee will indeed prevail in its attempt at acquiring them. Keep in mind that the committee can get these records from the cellphone carriers with a warrant; the House Republicans in question can’t just destroy the records or refuse to turn them over. There could end up being a court battle involved, but it’s a court battle that the committee can, and likely will, win.
