James Carville has something to say about Donald Trump’s impending downfall
Democratic Party operative James Carville was one of the few people who seemed to have an accurate understanding of how the 2020 Democratic primary was going to play out, even as most other pundits were getting it wrong. Now Carville is saying something eyebrow-raising about the general election, and it’s worth listening to.
James Carville appeared on Morning Joe on MSNBC and stated his expectation that “there is a significant chance” Donald Trump will drop out of the 2020 race. Carville thinks that Mitch McConnell will conclude that the GOP has a better chance of retaining the Senate if Trump is out of the way, and that McConnell will therefore selfishly push Trump to drop out.
Of course, as Palmer Report recently spelled out, Donald Trump has strong motivation not to drop out. He’s earmarked for prison the minute he’s no longer in office, so even if he only has a faint chance of reelection, he’ll want to cling to it as long as he can.
So if McConnell decides he wants Trump out of the way, he’ll have to find some kind of behind-the-scenes leverage or dirt to force Trump out of the race. It’s worth noting that on the same day James Carville made his prediction that McConnell will force Trump to drop out, two major news outlets reported that McConnell has set a calendar deadline for Trump to turn things around – so maybe Carville is onto something. We’ll see.
