Jack Smith just slammed the door on Donald Trump’s best shot at a trial defense

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. Even as his criminal trials draw nearer, Donald Trump is still spending most of his time giving senile speeches, while going through criminal defense attorneys the way most people go through dental floss.

But even as Trump continues to throw his life away, legal experts have said that if Trump does ultimately decide to try to win his trials, his best defense strategy may be to claim that he unknowingly committed these crimes on the bad advice of his former lawyers. This wouldn’t be a good strategy, and would only have a tiny chance of saving him. But in a reminder of just how screwed he is, this very weak strategy would be his best option. Except now it’s not an option.

Jack Smith just made a court filing spelling out that if Trump does use the “my lawyers tricked me into committing crimes” defense, it’ll mean that attorney-client privilege will no longer exist between Trump and his lawyers. Smith says he would use this as an opportunity to turn Trump’s lawyers into witnesses against him and to continue investigating Trump.

In other words, Jack Smith just slammed the door on the idea of Donald Trump blaming his attorneys for the crimes he committed. Even as Trump continues screwing around and pretending he’s a candidate for something, Smith is out there shutting down Trump’s potential defense strategies in advance. It’s a good thing Jack Smith is on our side.
