Jack Smith issues new subpoenas in Donald Trump classified documents probe, makes clear more charges are coming
Earlier today the Independent reported that Jack Smith is looking at bringing dozens of additional criminal charges against Donald Trump in his classified documents probe, possibly in a different jurisdiction in order to set up an additional trial with a different federal judge. Now it turns out Smith’s probe is indeed still ongoing.
The New York Times just reported that Jack Smith has issued additional subpoenas in the classified documents probe. This means the probe is continuing to move forward and uncover new angles. It also further underscores the notion that the charges that Smith has brought against Trump so far are indeed just the opening act, with more charges against Trump (and possibly others) still on the way.
Interestingly, the NY Times says that these latest subpoenas came from a grand jury in Miami, meaning Jack Smith hasn’t changed jurisdiction – at least not yet. But as we saw when Smith moved the original charges from a DC grand jury to a Miami grand jury, Smith can move this case from Miami to New Jersey or another jurisdiction at any time.
It’s worth noting that these new developments in Jack Smith’s classified documents probe are in addition to the charges that Jack Smith is expected to soon bring against Donald Trump and others for January 6th and the 2020 election plot. It’s the latest sign that Smith is indeed just getting started.
