Earlier today the January 6th Committee formally asked Ivanka Trump to cooperate with its probe into Donald Trump’s role in the insurrection. This first step is a formality; if she doesn’t comply, she’ll be subpoenaed, and then likely referred for prosecution for criminal contempt.

In response, Ivanka Trump has released a statement that’s head scratching to say the least, and frankly bizarre in nature. Here is what it says in full: “Ivanka Trump just learned that the January 6 Committee issued a public letter asking her to appear. As the Committee already knows, Ivanka did not speak at the January 6 rally. As she publicly stated that day at 3:15pm, ‘any security breach or disrespect to our law enforcement is unacceptable. The violence must stop immediately. Please be peaceful.'”

Here’s the thing: that’s the entire statement. It doesn’t address any of the matters that the committee raised in its letter to her. It doesn’t give any hint about whether she intends to cooperate or not. Instead it seems aimed solely at trying to make the case that Ivanka Trump doesn’t have any criminal liability for the Capitol attack. But the committee’s letter doesn’t accuse her of that, and instead merely spells out why she’s a material witness to her father’s actions.

We don’t have any idea what Ivanka is trying to do with this statement, and she doesn’t appear to have any idea either. It reads like something a publicist would write. Why? Does she not get how far beyond the PR stage this all is? The only thing that is clear about her response is that it still leaves the door open for her cooperation. We’ll see.
