Ivanka Trump faces blowback over John McCain remarks

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Donald Trump’s obligatory tweet last night about the passing of Senator John McCain was poorly received to say the least. He seemed to snub McCain while only offering “respect” to McCain’s family. This came after Trump had spent the past few years attacking McCain for having been a war hero, and openly mocking McCain while he was dying. It turns out Ivanka Trump’s remarks about McCain didn’t go over particularly well either.

Here’s what Ivanka Trump tweeted after John McCain died: “Honoring the memory and legacy of Senator John McCain, an American patriot, who served our great nation with distinction. My prayers are with Senator McCain’s family and loved ones as our nation mourns his passing.” On its face there is nothing wrong with this tweet, and at least she actually said something nice about McCain, while Donald Trump did not. But the consensus was that Ivanka had no business talking about McCain, considering that she never publicly pushed back against her father’s years of awful remarks about McCain.

Actor Daniel Danger Marin fired back with this: “But was he a war hero, Ivanka? Your dad doesn’t seem to think so, how about you?” Another respondent replied with “You have no right to speak about John McCain!” Others pointed out that John McCain made a point of asking former President Barack Obama and former President George W. Bush to eulogize him at his funeral, while stressing that he did not want current “President” Donald Trump in attendance.

To be clear, there was nothing that Donald Trump or Ivanka Trump could have tweeted about John McCain last night that would have received a positive response. But that’s a direct result of Donald having spent years attacking McCain over his prisoner of war status, and Ivanka having done nothing to push back against her father’s horrid rhetoric.
