Ivanka Trump has a whole new problem

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

When Ivanka Trump’s private email scandal exploded on Monday, Palmer Report pointed out that it was precisely the kind of Trump scandal that would end up on full display in public hearings once the Democrats take control of the House in early January. Now it turns out someone from the other team is trying to give the Democrats a head start when it comes to exposing Ivanka’s scandals.

We all remember when Trey Gowdy hauled in Hillary Clinton and spent eleven hours falsely accusing her of any number of things. Most of that idiocy was based around Gowdy’s false claim that Hillary’s use of private email was illegal, and the absurd false claim that Hillary was somehow responsible for the deaths of four Americans in Benghazi. These sham hearings did Gowdy no favors, and his failure on that day may have contributed to his eventual decision this year to retire from politics entirely – but Gowdy isn’t quite done yet.

The thing is, by his own admission, Trey Gowdy is now hoping to eventually become a prosecutor or judge. To land a job like that, you have to come off as being impartial and honest. Gowdy is stuck with the reputation of being a lying partisan hack, and he surely knows it. Now Gowdy has been handed a gift on his way out the door. Ivanka Trump has an email scandal, and he’s figured out that he can go after her, to try to prove that he’s an equal opportunity harsh grader. Sure enough, Gowdy is diving right in.

Trey Gowdy is still the House Oversight Chairman for a few more weeks, and he’s using that power to demand that the White House turn over the details of Ivanka Trump’s private email usage for government business. Even though Gowdy is just grandstanding, he’s actually taking the first steps that the Democrats would have taken once they assume the majority. So Gowdy is significantly speeding up the process for the Democrats.

Sure, Gowdy is just trying to rehabilitate his own reputation on his way out the door. But so what? He’s putting his longtime foe, incoming House Oversight Chair Elijah Cummings, in a great position to dive in on the Ivanka Trump email scandal in January. The key here: when Hillary Clinton used personal email for government business from 2009 to 2012, there were no rules against it – but by the time Ivanka did it in 2017, it was 100% against the rules.
