It’s way too quiet today and I don’t trust it
This has been one of the more news-filled weeks, and in fact one of the more news-filled months, in modern U.S. political history. Yesterday we reached a crescendo, in more ways than one. And yet thus far today… well, I don’t trust the silence today.
Might we actually have a slow news day today for once? Is everyone still suffering a Halloween hangover? Has everyone in politics finally exhausted themselves to the point that they don’t have any more moves to make? Well, no, not really. In fact this is all just getting started.
Yesterday the House passed a formal impeachment resolution. The President of the United States is being impeached – and that alone is one of the more rare sentences in our political history. Immediately after the impeachment resolution passed, the President of the United States announced he’s moving from New York to Florida, even though he doesn’t actually live in either state, and he isn’t actually moving. These are major, confusing developments with significant fallout to come. It just didn’t come this morning, apparently.
One thing I like to watch for on Fridays is whether the news cycle starts to accelerate as the day goes on. Thus far today, we haven’t seen anything. Trump bragged about a job report that was actually a pretty bad one. He made up the word “highjacked.” This isn’t news. Yet the House is clearly making significant impeachment moves behind the scenes, and Trump is panicked enough that he’s selling off his only profitable hotel and changing his official state of residence. Something is in the air. But at the moment it’s a strange silence. We’ll see if this silent period resolves itself as the day goes on.
