Steve Bannon’s appeal of his contempt of Congress conviction is getting underway this week in court. He’ll lose, and his prison sentence will be upheld. Contempt of Congress is the kind of very minor charge where you can remain out of prison while appealing it, but Bannon will go to prison in his contempt case. And that’s just the start.

Bannon has also been hit with far more serious criminal charges in New York, and he’s awaiting trial in that matter. When he’s convicted on those kinds of charges, he won’t be able to remain out of prison while appealing the verdict. He’ll simply go to state prison – most likely Rikers Island. But Bannon is finished even before getting to any of that.

Steve Bannon’s latest gambit was an attempt at getting Jim Jordan elected Speaker of the House. How’d that work out? Bannon is powerless. This is a guy who used to control Breitbart, used to control the Mercers’ political money, and used to have a high ranking White House job. Now he’s a podcaster, out on bail and on his way to prison, who wields almost no political influence on his way down.

For all the endless doomsday hyperbole that we hear on social media about how Steve Bannon is now more dangerously powerful than ever, it’s simply not true. This guy’s influence ended a long time ago. At this point he’s just spending his life playing defense, in a failing effort at staying out of prison. It’s all over for him but the bravado.
