Even as observers continue to float increasingly absurd conspiracy theories about why Donald Trump is changing his state residency from New York to Florida, the explanation remains as simple as it is obvious. When you combine it with his recent decision to sell off his only profitable hotel, it’s clear that Trump is broke, and making these moves out of financial desperation.

One of the most popular conspiracy theories out there is that Donald Trump is changing his residency so New York can’t get its hands on his tax returns. This turns out to be total nonsense, because nothing magically works that way. Yet this is precisely the reason Trump is floating for having made the move. The New York Times says that Trump was “infuriated by a subpoena filed by Cyrus R. Vance Jr., the Manhattan district attorney, seeking the tax returns, the person close to the president said.” In the very next sentence, the Times explains that it doesn’t actually work that way.

Here’s the thing. If Donald Trump really did decide he wanted to change his residency to try to stick it to the district attorney, one of the people around him would have explained to him that it doesn’t work that way, and they’d have talked him out of it. Yet Trump is very much going through with it, and he’s floating this idiotic reason why, which means that he thinks he’s making the move for this reason, when in fact it’s being made for some other reason.

In other words, the people tending to Donald Trump’s business have decided that he needs to change his state residency for reasons of financial desperation, but they didn’t want to have to tell Trump that he’s just that broke, so instead they framed the move as being a revenge ploy against the DA. It’s further proof that Trump is being coddled by his own people, and he’s now so fragile, they know he can’t deal with facing the fact that he’s going bankrupt yet again.
