Donald Trump keeps interrupting meetings in shockingly ridiculous ways
Donald Trump’s toxic unpopularity has caused every Republican candidate to severely underperform in every special election that’s been held since he’s taken office. When Trump endorses a candidate, that person often goes down in the polls as a result. Some GOP candidates have actively tried to dodge Trump’s support because they don’t want it. Now Trump is desperately trying to convince himself that he’s actually somehow winning these elections – to the point that he’s interrupting meetings in the most ridiculous of ways.
Trump tweeted earlier today that he was “8 for 9” in elections thus far, but those numbers are a work of fiction. For instance he lost the Alabama Senate election twice, first by endorsing a Republican who lost in the primary race, and then by endorsing a Republican who lost the general election, in a state where it’s supposed to be impossible for a Democrat to win. Trump also appears to be counting recent primary races where his preferred Republican beat some other Republican, when that person was favored to begin with.
It turns out Trump isn’t merely trying to convince us that he’s doing well with his endorsements, he’s also rather urgently trying to convince himself and his advisors in private. The Wall Street Journal reports that, during a meeting about the congressional elections, “Several times Mr. Trump interrupted the conversation to summon aides to the Oval Office to share charts showing his endorsement record and to discuss the size of his following on social media.”
So that’s where Donald Trump’s head is right now. He’s either too clueless to understand, or too delusional to acknowledge, that he and his party have been doing historically horridly in the elections thus far. We’ve seen various Democratic candidates perform ten, twenty, thirty, forty points higher than expected – and the only explanation is that Trump’s own profound unpopularity is dragging the Republican Party down across the board.
