House Judiciary Committee is already making preparations for Donald Trump’s impeachment
Now that the Democrats have taken control of the House Judiciary Committee, it might as well be renamed the House Impeachment Committee, because that’s where the inevitable impeachment process will begin. Are we being overly presumptuous when we say that it’s inevitable? We don’t think so, and in fact the Republicans on the committee just tipped off that they know it’s inevitable as well.
The Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee just posted a job listing seeking an attorney with “several years of investigative or litigation experience,” as flagged by Axios. In our view, the only possible reason for hiring such an attorney would be to act as Donald Trump’s de facto defense counsel in impeachment proceedings, which means the Republicans expect it to happen. So now what?
Nancy Pelosi stated this morning on the Today Show that she doesn’t intend to initiate impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump until Special Counsel Robert Mueller delivers his report on Trump’s numerous crimes. This makes sense, as you wouldn’t put a suspect on trial without first waiting for the police report to come in. But various reports suggest that Mueller could be ready to drop the hammer on Trump within the next month – and that would explain why House Republicans are already trying to hire outside impeachment counsel.
It’s also worth noting that the Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee don’t appear to be interested in trying to defend Donald Trump themselves. In fairness, most of them don’t have backgrounds as trial attorneys. Nonetheless, this could be interpreted as the House GOP members not wanting to tie their own fate to having to directly defend Trump once all of his felonies are exposed.
