Even as Texas House Republicans were impeaching and removing unhinged Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton this weekend, Donald Trump kept loudly and publicly attacking them over it. It was clear that Trump feared what might come next if Paxton were ousted.

Now we’re starting to see some of why. Paxton appeared on a podcast with convicted felon Steve Bannon (being posted on social media as “new” but turns out it’s from back in 2021) and claimed that Trump only won Texas in 2020 because of the legal action that Paxton took to suppress the vote in the more liberal Texas counties.

Paxton provided some numbers to support his argument, such as the fact that Trump only won Texas by about 600,000 votes. He claimed that he managed to use his office to get millions of votes thrown out in Texas’ big cities, which would have indeed made the difference.

Of course for all we know, Paxton could be vastly overstating the impact he had on the outcome, in an attempt at making himself look more influential than he is. But whether Paxton’s claim is accurate or not, the fact that he’s making this claim – and that it’s circulating wide at the worst time possible – is an ugly blow for Trump.

This could get far worse for Donald Trump. After all, Paxton is already under federal criminal investigation on various matters, and he’s long been viewed as a potential Trump co-conspirator in the national effort to overthrow the election. Texas Republicans may have finally impeached Paxton because they wanted to get out ahead of the possibility that he goes down (or cuts a deal against Trump) in Jack Smith’s January 6th probe. And now it turns our Paxton has been spilling secrets already.
