If Donald Trump really wants to go there…

I hope, for the sake of struggling seniors everywhere, that the Trump regime doesn’t screw up Social Security badly enough that the checks get delayed. But if it does end up happening, it’ll go down as one of the biggest political blunders of all time.
It’s not just that seniors (and other Social Security recipients such as disabled people and survivors) wouldn’t get their checks. It’s that the Trump regime has already so loudly taken credit for such a scenario. There’s Elon Musk and his team, who keep trying to hack into Social Security to get their hands on private data. Then there’s Trump Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick who just went on television and claimed that seniors wouldn’t mind missing a Social Security check. He went even further and claimed that anyone who would complain about missing a Social Security check is certainly a scammer.
This sets the table for absolute disaster for the Trump regime if Social Security payments do end up being interrupted. If you announce you’re going to set a building on fire, and you’re seen running into that building with matches and gasoline, and then the building ends up on fire, you’re going to have a hard time convincing anyone that you didn’t do it.
We’ll see if this Trump regime – which is rapidly revealing itself to be every bit as incompetent as it is evil – ends up being so stunningly incompetent as to screw up Social Security checks. It’s one of the few things that could turn nearly all senior citizens against a President in an instant. And since most people have a parent or grandparent who relies on Social Security, this would be the kind of crisis that would negatively impact pretty much everyone.
So if Donald Trump wants to quickly drive his historically low approval rating even lower, then by all means, he might as well go ahead and screw up Social Security. We can’t stop him from doing it. But if he does it, we sure will make a point of using it to whittle away further at what’s left of his rapidly shrinking political muscle.
