In the world of classic literature, one of the lesser-known works is called “Chronicles of a death foretold” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. In this book, a beloved citizen is murdered in the small town where he lives. This isn’t a spoiler as it’s told to the reader in the first paragraph.

The book’s focus isn’t on the victim of the grizzly murder. Instead, it’s on the town folk– most of whom knew the perpetrator, knew of the plans for murder — and did nothing. The murder was foretold, you see. And it could have been stopped — by many at different times. Yet people were weak. Someone ELSE can stop it, they thought. This allowed tragedy to strike.

In some senses, the plot mirrors the real-life foretelling of Donald Trump. For make no mistake, Trump’s evil WAS foretold. I can’t even count how many could have stopped him. His family. His (I cannot call them friends) group of Mar-a-lago sycophants. The Republican party.

ANY ONE PERSON AT ANY TIME COULD HAVE STOPPED THE MADNESS. They knew. They all knew. They knew it was coming and that there was a chance that Trump’s madness could lead to even more tragedy. And still, they said nothing.

They covered up for him on January 6. You saw Kevin McCarthy twisting himself into a pretzel to avoid blaming Trump. The truth is Trump’s sins were foretold. The people around Trump mirror the townspeople in this book. Sometimes fiction does become a reality. Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction.

Now, the punishment is so very near. The breaking news we’ve recently had is that the day before the FBI did their thing at Mar-a-Lago, two of Trump’s employees are believed to have moved the boxes containing the stolen documents.

The Washington Post broke this story and said investigators view this as “highly suspicious.” At this point, it’s a question of when, not if, as it relates to a Jack Smith indictment. Leaks are happening like crazy. Trump is cracking up. But how easily this all could have been avoided! Let me give you a demonstration.

These two employees could have said: “No, Mr. President.”

They could have called the FBI. And as for the GOP, they could have made an announcement in unison with each other. It could have looked something like this: “We denounce Donald Trump and the sins he has perpetuated on America. And we apologize.” But nope. Such a thing did not happen. Because cowardice won out.

And now they all must face the consequences. For the GOP, these consequences will be a presidential race featuring a (twice? thrice?) indicted thug. For others, perhaps they themselves will be indicted. All because Nobody did a damned thing. All because the story of Trump was foretold — and given as much attention by Republicans as a sad little scrap of thrown-away paper.
