Donald Trump tried to make himself look strong and authoritative yesterday when he announced that he was disinviting the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles from tomorrow’s planned White House visit. But as the details began to surface, it became clear that this was already a loss for Trump before he called it off. In fact it demonstrates just how badly he’s losing on a larger scale.

Just as Trump was announcing that he was banning the entire Philadelphia Eagles team from the White House, various news outlets were reporting that so many players were planning to boycott, only a single digit number of players were expected to show up. NFL football teams have fifty-three players on their roster. This means that nearly the entire team, including the majority of black players and the majority white players, had already decided to sit this one out.

Trump eventually acknowledged this on Twitter, stating that “Unfortunately, only a small number of players decided to come.” Even after admitting this, he then went on to claim that he had canceled the visit because he disagrees with the Eagles when it comes to kneeling for the National Anthem. Of course this was quickly exposed as a lie, because not a single Eagles player took a knee last season. This was simply about the black and white Eagles players coming together and almost unanimously deciding that Trump was such a racist piece of crap, they didn’t want anything to do with him.

In other words, even as Donald Trump has worked so hard at dividing America along racial lines for his own benefit, it turns out he’s unwittingly united the players of various races on the Philadelphia Eagles against him. He’s taken things in such an egregious and disgusting direction, people of even halfway decent character and social awareness can’t abide by him. This is yet another reminder that Trump is losing this fight.
