House Republican George Santos has been expelled and is awaiting criminal trial. Meanwhile there’s a special election to fill his seat, and in spite of a relative lack of national media coverage, the race is heating up already.

Both parties already have their official candidates in place. The Democrats are running former Congressman Tom Suozzi, who has dived into the race in a big way. The Republicans are running Mazi Melesa Pilip, who so far has posted a grand total of one tweet on her campaign account.

Suozzi has accepted invitations to three different televised debates, even while asking Pilip whether she’s willing to participate in any of them. Cook Political Report has this race listed a “Toss Up” which means the race could go either way and is expected to be close.

This special election will decide a crucial seat at a time when the House Republican majority is small enough to count on one hand with fingers to spare. This election will also serve as a harbinger for what we can expect from the 2024 election cycle. And of course this is an election to replace George Santos, one of the more controversial members of Congress in recent memory.

Yet for some reason – perhaps simply the holidays – this special election is still getting very little national media coverage. Let’s not allow the lack of media attention to lull us into forgetting about this election. We have an opportunity to get behind Tom Suozzi early and help propel him to a lead right out of the gate.
