Even as the Biden administration tries to deal with the Ohio railroad disaster that was created by Trump-Republican policies, Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg has done a strong job of leading the way.

Of course House Republicans know that Buttigieg has a bright future in Democratic Party politics, so they see the railroad disaster as an opportunity to create a phony scandal around Buttigieg. To that end, they’re trying to target him in a sham House investigation.

The problem for House Republicans is that they don’t know anything, and they don’t care to learn. They sent a letter to Buttigieg and the Department of Transportation, making demands about the National Transportation Safety Board. The trouble: the National Transportation Safety Board isn’t even part of the Department of Transportation.

Buttigieg tweeted this in response to the letter: “I am alarmed to learn that the Chair of the House Oversight Committee thinks that the NTSB is part of our Department. NTSB is independent (and with good reason). Still, of course, we will fully review this and respond appropriately.”

House Republicans are biting off way more than they can chew by targeting someone as smart and savvy as Pete Buttigieg. They wouldn’t be able to go toe to toe with him on their best day. And as this inexplicable letter reveals, this is going to be far from House Republicans’ best day.
