House Republicans scramble after Trump blowback

Just two weeks ago, 126 House Republicans – more than half of the ones currently seated in Congress – decided to betray the will of the American people by signing onto a seditious Texas lawsuit. It was a long shot that had no chance of going anywhere, and rightly provoked an angry outcry.

How bad was the backlash? Rep. Dan Newhouse of Washington state is already trying to convince voters that he didn’t really mean it. On Sunday, he released a newspaper op-ed saying so: “I maintain, despite the numerous media reports to the contrary, that this brief — and this case — was not about overturning election results…The consequences of a lack of confidence in our election system are not just for this election, but for future national elections as well. If now is not the time to stand up for our Constitution, when is?”

Newhouse is of course, lying – since overturning the 2020 election results was the entire point of the lawsuit and writing this nonsense is almost worse than doing nothing at all – as he’s now hoping for a way to backpedal and sweep this under the rug before Joe Biden takes the oath of office. Although we are seeing Donald Trump’s leverage over House Republicans dry up with something like this being published, it’s clear that their disregard for the democratic process will continue to live on after Trump is out of office and we cannot allow them to whitewash it away.

We must let the 2022 midterms be a referendum on the GOP and their reckless disregard for democracy if we’re to prevent someone like Donald Trump from taking the reins of power in the near future. No one who signed onto the lawsuit should be trusted again with elected office.
