House Republicans are BACKING OFF their Biden impeachment threat – and the entire media is getting the story wrong
For months House Republicans have been publicly vowing to impeach President Biden. Today they backed down from that threat, by scuttling their talk of impeachment hearings in favor of launching a mere “impeachment inquiry” – which isn’t anything. So that’s the end of the impeachment talk, right? Well, it should have been.
Even though House Republicans gave up on their Biden impeachment threat today – to the point that an enraged Matt Gaetz threatened to have Kevin McCarthy removed for failing to impeach Biden – the entire media (on both sides) is now pretending like impeachment is in fact happening. That’s because the media has concluded that putting the words “Biden” and “impeachment” in the same sentence is good for ratings on all sides. Nevermind that there is no Biden impeachment to speak of.
So the House Republicans will now limp forward with a mere “impeachment inquiry” instead of impeachment hearings, and the entire media will misleadingly characterize that inquiry as if it is an impeachment. Accordingly, the entire media (including our “friends” at MSNBC) is now giving Kevin McCarthy exactly what he wanted: an imaginary Biden impeachment. McCarthy gets to make it look like he’s doing something when he’s not, and he doesn’t have to take the risk of trying an actual impeachment.
To be clear, the odds of House Republicans impeaching Biden are still greater than zero. McCarthy is quickly finding out that House Republicans in far right districts are very unhappy that he’s decided not to impeach Biden, and they’re pushing back loudly. We’ll see if McCarthy ends up caving to them later and (stupidly) giving them the impeachment they want.
But for now, today’s real headline is that House Republicans have decided not to impeach President Biden, and are merely doing an “impeachment inquiry” to make it look like they’re doing something when they’re not. It’s a real shame that nearly every headline, on all sides, is getting this 100% backwards (on purpose) and falsely declaring that impeachment is now upon us. But then again, every time the Republicans make an empty threat like this, the entire media (on both sides) always eagerly plays along and pretends that empty threat is real, in order to gin up ratings. On days like this, the entire media is serving as the Republican Party’s publicist and nothing more.
