House Republicans go utterly berserk when they realize they can’t stop Donald Trump from being impeached

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

The loudest of House Republicans have made clear throughout the impeachment process – and indeed throughout their careers – that they have no familiarity with how the law, the Constitution, the country, or anything else works. So perhaps they went into today truly thinking that if they shouted enough loud and angry lies, they could actually stop the articles of impeachment against Donald Trump from being passed.

In any case, as today’s televised House impeachment hearings have gone on, it’s become clear that House Republicans now understand that they can’t stop any of this. The articles of impeachment will be ratified. Donald Trump will be impeached. History will record it. It can never be undone. So now the House GOP is simply going utterly, embarrassingly, maniacally berserk for all to see.

When House Republican Doug Collins used the made-up word “irregardless” while trying to dishonestly defend Trump today, it probably wasn’t even among the ten dumbest things that Collins has said this week. But some of his colleagues took things much further. Republican Congressman Barry Loudermilk directly compared Trump to Jesus, complete with a story about Christ and Pontius Pilate. We’re not even sure what to do with that, considering that Jesus was on trial for his life, while Trump is merely being impeached, and that if Jesus were in Congress right now, he would absolutely vote in favor of Trump’s impeachment.

House Republicans are going derangedly out of their minds for one reason only. They’re not trying to change the minds of anyone in the room, or anyone among the general public; that ship has sailed. They’re not trying to get their names into the right side of the history books; eventually they’ll all regret the display of idiocy they’ve put on today. Instead they’re simply pandering to an audience of one. They know Donald Trump is a mentally unstable lunatic who can end their careers with a 2020 primary challenge on a whim if he wants – and they’re all kissing up to him in the hope that he doesn’t blame them for the fact that he’s getting impeached.
