We’ve now entered the hostage negotiation phase of Donald Trump’s demise

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Palmer Report has long predicted that, as it became more clear to Donald Trump that he was going to be ousted, he would try to find ways to take America hostage as a way of trying to hang onto power longer. We’ve likened it to a bank robber getting cornered by the police in front of a convenience store, and then taking the store hostage. Based on Trump’s own words today, it’s now clear that we’ve entered the hostage negotiation phase of his demise.

Here’s what Donald Trump tweeted today, as his ongoing failed trade deal negotiations continued to fall further apart: “There is no political necessity to keep Canada in the new NAFTA deal. If we don’t make a fair deal for the U.S. after decades of abuse, Canada will be out. Congress should not interfere w/ these negotiations or I will simply terminate NAFTA entirely & we will be far better off.” Wait a minute here, because one part of this is crucial.

Trump has decided that he’s going to scuttle NAFTA and replace it with something else, even if it ends up being worse for the United States, because he wants something with his name on it. Is he under the delusion that a worse new trade deal will somehow make his presidency viable? Is he merely trying to create a fake accomplishment because he knows his time is nearly up? In any case, what stands out here is that he’s threatening to outright destroy the U.S. economy if Congress tries to “interfere.”

This is truly no different than a hostage-taker threatening to start shooting hostages if the police interfere. The truly mind boggling part here is that Donald Trump is making these threats against his own Republican Party, which controls Congress, and which has largely stood against his failed trade wars. This is literally insane behavior by Trump, and it’s stunning – yet not surprising – that the Republican Congress is still refusing to impeach and remove him.
