Everything hits the fan at once
Remember back when Donald Trump held that treasonous press conference with Vladimir Putin five weeks ago? Just kidding, that was only five days ago. So much has transpired in the past week with regard to Trump’s criminal scandals, the quickening pace has become difficult to keep up with. In fact, just the past twenty-four hours have been a dizzying array of high stakes developments that keep shifting the ground beneath us.
The saga of arrested Russian operative Maria Butina has become so complex and eye popping, it’s almost easier to list off which Republican politicians weren’t tangled up with her. Considering that the Feds raided her home all the way back in April, it no longer matters much at this point whether she cuts a plea deal or not; everyone who criminally conspired with her is going down. It’s also becoming more clear than ever that she was in fact working on behalf of the uppermost levels of the Russian government, and not as some kind of lone wolf or free agent. But that’s just one of the storylines that’s exploded over the past day.
We now have confirmation that it was Donald Trump who waived privilege for the incriminating tapes of him and Michael Cohen. Why? No one knows, as there is no possible way that doing so could help him. Now we’ve got Trump attacking Cohen on Twitter, Cohen’s attorney attacking Trump, and Cohen’s biggest rival Michael Avenatti announcing that he’s willing to join Cohen’s legal team in order to take on Trump.
Oh, and just for kicks, the FISA surveillance warrant against Donald Trump’s campaign adviser Carter Page just became public. It reveals that the FBI was able to convince a federal judge that there was reason to suspect Page was acting as a foreign agent of Russia. Everything is hitting the fan at once, and none of it is good news for Trump. What will the next twenty-four hours bring? That is anyone’s guess – but the pace of these developments keeps accelerating.
