Donald Trump falls down and hits his head

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Donald Trump has posted tweets that have been racist, sexist, xenophobic, and transphobic. He’s posted tweets that have defended domestic abusers. He’s posted tweets that have threatened nuclear war. He’s posted tweets that have been felonies. He’s posted a number of tweets that didn’t even appear to have been written by him. But as far as his stupidest tweets go, Trump has just found a whole new level of stupid that we didn’t even know existed.

Here’s what Trump tweeted yesterday: “Republicans want to fix DACA far more than the Democrats do. The Dems had all three branches of government back in 2008-2011, and they decided not to do anything about DACA. They only want to use it as a campaign issue. Vote Republican!” This tweet has a unique quality in that every single word of it is false. No serious person believes that Trump and the Republicans want to reform immigration; they’re now the anti-immigration party. But that’s not even the most incorrect thing about this tweet.

President Obama took office in 2009, not 2008. Plenty of people forget that when someone wins a presidential election, they don’t take office until the next calendar year. But you’d think Trump of all people would recall this, because he just took office himself. Lest you think this was just a typo, consider that Trump got it wrong in both directions; he’s falsely claiming that the Democrats controlled Congress in 2011, when they technically only held lame duck control for the first few days of that year. So Trump has somehow spun a two year window into a four year window.

Also, President Obama moved forward with DACA in 2012, after the Republicans had taken control of Congress and blocked him from being able to reform immigration via the legislative process. As for Donald Trump’s assertion that the Democrats only want to use immigration reform as a campaign issue, he’s conveniently forgetting Obama tried to fix immigration with DACA. In fact, if you go back and read Trump’s tweet, it becomes clear that he doesn’t know what DACA is or what it does. Last week he posted a tweet that made it sound like he thought DACA was a person. Lord help us all.
