Michael Cohen sends a huge hint that he’s flipping on Donald Trump
Over the weekend, the Feds informed Michael Cohen – through the media – that they’re looking at charging and arresting him within the next twelve days. That’s led to the question of whether or not Cohen will formally cut a plea deal within that short timeframe. Now Cohen, through his own criminal defense lawyer, is dropping a big hint that he’s flipping on Trump after all.
Michael Cohen and his recently hired attorney Lanny Davis had been invoking a strategy of waging war against Donald Trump in public on a daily basis. But that abruptly came to an end more than a week ago, as they both went completely silent. People do tend to go silent while they’re negotiating a plea deal, but there’s more than one way to explain silence. However, Cohen’s attorney did finally speak yesterday, just as the news was dropping that Cohen had less than two weeks left.
Cohen’s lawyer Lanny Davis made a point of revealing to Politico yesterday that he’s been seeking advice from John Dean, the former White House Counsel who flipped on Richard Nixon and ultimately did the most to bring him down. The only kind of advice to get from someone like Dean is how to best go about flipping, how to come out of it with the most lenient sentence, and how to play it in the media so that Cohen might end up being remembered positively for his actions, as happened to Dean.
Again, this is not a guarantee that Michael Cohen is going to finalize a plea deal before his arrest date. But it’s a huge hint in that direction. For that matter, Lanny Davis knows that it’s a huge hint, and he’s savvy enough that he wouldn’t say something like that unless he was intentionally trying to send that message. In turn, Davis wouldn’t drop a hint like this without Cohen’s approval. We’ll see what Cohen ultimately does. The clock is ticking on him.
