Hey Donald, don’t let the door hit you!
The literal and figurative clouds that hang over Washington D.C. will dissipate as Joe Biden takes his rightful place in the White House. We can debate the symbolism of the clearing clouds; many people are doing so today. The story writes itself. A bad dictator-type leader loses power as his replacement arrives on a white horse and the sun bursts through the heavy clouds.
The departing leader leaves power filled with vengeance and scattering land-mines across the new leader’s inevitable path. The audience, exhausted from the drama, squints at the screen, waiting for some last evil deed. Cliches fill the day.
Online conspiracy theorists predict a last-minute declaration of Martial Law, compelling Donald Trump to remain in power. The pillow guy called it; how could it now be true?
The sane amongst us are desperately staring at the tv, praying for lack of violence and an uneventful passing of the car keys to the new president. Donald Trump can leave the White House in Pig-Pen’s style, trailed by a permanent cloud of filth. The Trump Crime Family is almost the official problem of Palm Beach, Florida. Residents of the small, wealthy town don’t want him any more than we do. Oh well, what’s the worst he can do in Palm Beach? Start a new political party that will shred the remaining Republican Party?
Leaving in disgrace with no accolades or audience is not the end that the soon to be former president would have written for himself. The heavily militarized zone would have been a military parade honoring a second Trump term. Often targeted groups like immigrants, minorities, gays, and the disabled would fear the power of Trump. The nationalist groups would unite and rise to power to support their leader. Trump’s popularity would have carried a wave of support, awarding him the House and the Senate.
Instead, there are no alternative facts today. There will be no more White House or Air Force One. There will be no control of science, and the tax-payer funded golf trips are part of the Trump era’s stain on American history. For today, we will let the rain cleanse the nation as the sun adds light to the hopefulness of democracy.
