Here’s the thing about the handful of House Democrats coming out against President Biden

Over the past several days a small handful of House Democrats and Democratic House candidates have come out and said that President Biden should retire at the end of his term. I fully disagree with them, but I have a different approach on this than most. I say let them do it if they want. Why?

For one thing, if they were actually trying to push Biden out of the race, they’d be coming together and making a unified statement. Instead these folks are putting out these statements individually. That’s because they’re not trying to create critical mass for forcing Biden out. They’re not trying to push him out at all. They’re just trying to score points for themselves. And that’s actually okay.

Again, why? You’ll notice that the handful of Democrats saying this about Biden are all in swing districts, where the outcome is decided by the moderate voters in the middle who don’t much like either party. By coming out against both Biden and Trump, these Democratic candidates in these districts are increasing their own odds of winning in November. In so doing, they’re increasing the odds that Biden will have a House majority if he wins.

This kind of strategy may sound cynical and bizarre to those who aren’t accustomed to following how politics really works – but it is indeed how politics works. It’s somewhat similar to back when the Democrats had the House majority with votes to spare. Whenever they were voting on particularly progressive legislation, a handful of House Democrats in moderate districts would strategically vote against it in order to show their constituents how moderate they were. And whenever they were voting on bipartisan legislation, a handful of House Democrats in progressive districts would strategically vote against it in order to show their constituents how progressive they were. There was always a big fuss on social media about this from folks who didn’t understand how any of this stuff worked, but it was always for nothing.

It’s a similar situation now. President Biden isn’t being hurt by a handful of no-names individually coming out against him. There’s no one who’s going to say “Well I was going to vote for Biden but then some House Democrat I’ve never heard of said he shouldn’t be in the race.”

So let’s just allow that process to sort itself out. There’s no reason for us to go after our Democratic nominees in winnable House districts just because they’re not siding with Biden – when going after them actually could cost us the House majority. Instead our job is to push back against the media’s attacks on Biden, which are in fact intended to sabotage him. We have to drown out the media’s lies in order to win. Remember, eyes on the prize.
