Here’s statistical proof that there’s no inherent patriotism in the Republican Party

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

For decades, the GOP has liked to call itself “the patriotic party” even if its actions, aside from frequent American flag displays, tend to say otherwise. It’s something that the base has always eaten up – somehow convinced that voting Republican makes you more American in your values than the average person. The trouble is now there’s even statistical proof that this belief is wrong and probably always was.

Even though patriotism is an abstract concept, a new report commissioned by WalletHub ranked states using 13 different metrics – looking carefully at things like rates of voting, volunteering, as well as number of veterans and military members on active duty. The top 20 states that received the highest ranking were split evenly between states won by Trump and Biden in 2020, but when it came to the top ten, six of them were states that President Biden won in 2020 – and all six of them places where he won decisively – states like Maryland and Virginia.

Republicans aren’t any more patriotic than anyone else as the stats show – and President Biden’s sincere, patriotic messaging in his speeches is clearly getting through to people who care about their country – something that cuts across party lines. It could also be a pivotal way to lift some of the administration’s most crucial agenda – infrastructure and protecting Americans’ sacred right to vote in the weeks ahead.
