The U.S. Supreme Court is set to announce numerous major decisions today. This will likely (but not definitely) include its ruling on Donald Trump’s claim of presidential immunity. There are a few different ways this ruling could go in terms of Trump’s next criminal trial.

The court could rule that a President is indeed immune from any criminal prosecution taken for any acts in office, but that’s unlikely even for this Supreme Court. It’s more likely that we’ll see one of two other outcomes.

The Supreme Court could rule fully or partially against Trump, or it could remand the whole thing back to the lower court. Either way, this could allow Jack Smith to move forward. If the court strikes parts of his case against Trump, he could drop those specific aspects of the case and move forward with the remainder of the case against Trump.

If the ruling does come down today, then the question will be how quickly Jack Smith, Judge Tanya Chutkan, and the federal court system can ramp up the Washington DC criminal case against Donald Trump, and whether it can get him on trial before the election. We’ll find out soon enough.
