Headed for the bottom

Let’s say you’re out in the middle of the sea in a boat, and that boat starts holding water. The water begins to flood the boat — that you’re on. Most people would do something, perhaps steering the boat back to shore. After all, still waters aren’t always so still — sometimes they swirl, and in a case where they’re swirling around YOU, you’d want to abandon ship as soon as possible and find high ground. But it seems the GOP cannot, in fact, find any ground. Republicans are in deep, unequivocal danger of capsizing.
Many in the GOP are reportedly angry at Trump for his tariffs. They are feeling bleak. Four senators showed anger by voting to rescind the tariffs (25%) on Canada. Susan Collins, Mitch McConnell, Lisa Murkowski, and Rand Paul caused a bit of a political earthquake by defying him and voting for a resolution stating that the tariffs on Canada must be reversed.
The Turtle even issued a public rebuke of Donald Trump, showing that for once, at least a few Republicans are not lying down for him. Mike Pence, the former VP Trump who almost got hanged, also made a stinging remark saying this is the most “significant peacetime tax hike in US history.”
The Wall Street Journal denounced the tariffs. Once his best friend, the WSJ appears to be steadily turning against the flipped-out fool of a President, and with good reason. Concern aficionado Senator Susan Collins voiced strong concern for lobstering agriculture in her state, saying the tariffs could hurt and damage the industry. North Carolina’s Thom Tillis warned of the dangers to farmers these tariffs could cause, saying they could cause “irreparable damage.”
So yes, things are not going well in GOP land. However, even though a few Republicans are, in fact, speaking out, most remain silent. That is where my capsizing analogy comes into play. Think seriously about what happens to Republicans if they stay silent. Think about the rising water levels quickly getting higher, obscuring their political futures.
MIDTERMS. I say this sincerely and firmly. If the GOP thinks they can win ANY elections in the future by standing motionless, frozen silhouettes, watching silently and expressionlessly as the water rises still higher, covering them from head to toe, they’re delusional.
These people MUST find their tongues. They must gently take them back from the cats who got them and speak up clearly and authentically about how awful these tariffs are, and what a mess they could be for ALL the American people. Make no mistake if they don’t, their political futures will sink quickly to the bottom — and few things that fall to the bottom ever come back up again — instead, they simply drift away.
