Donald Trump tips off that he’s scared to death of what the GOP is selfishly doing to him right now

This morning Donald Trump singled out a number of House Democrats – all of them conveniently Black, Hispanic, Muslim, or Jewish – as being to blame for his rapidly sinking prospects. Even as Trump beats his chest in xenophobic fashion about what the Democrats are doing to him, he’s giving away that he’s scared to death of what the Republicans are doing to him right now.

We’re five days into Donald Trump’s impeachment, and Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell hasn’t said anything in Trump’s defense. In fact McConnell hasn’t said much of anything all, beyond making a point of confirming that he won’t try to scuttle an impeachment trial if the House sends over articles of impeachment. Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has been a bit more vocal in Trump’s defense this week, though barely above a whisper. But these aren’t the Republicans Trump has to worry about.

This week two Republican Governors, Phil Scott of Vermont and Charlie Baker of Massachusetts, both came out in favor of impeachment. Donald Trump didn’t even bother to attack them. Governors don’t get to vote on impeachment, but members of Congress do. So it’s even more notable that two House Republicans – James Comer and Mark Amodei – came out in favor of the impeachment inquiry, if not actually in favor of going through with impeachment. Trump didn’t bother to attack them either.

Instead, all we’re getting out of Donald Trump is a series of tweets heaping random praise on certain Republicans whose support he appears to be afraid of losing in the impeachment battle. In his more lucid moments, Trump seems to understand that the insufficient support he’s getting from the GOP right now is a sign that if House and Senate Republicans feel they need to selfishly oust him in order to protect their own reelection chances, they’ll do it.
