GOP runs and hides
Donald Trump gave a speech today that he was hoping he wouldn’t have to give: he reluctantly (and semi-coherently) denounced the racists and white supremacists who helped put him in office. Trump had no choice, after most Americans blamed him and his rhetoric for the El Paso shooting. Now it turns out Trump’s party is running and hiding as a result.
Rachel Maddow revealed on-air that she reached out to thirty different Republicans in the House and Senate, hoping to find one who was willing to come on her show tonight and discuss current events. Not a single one of them was willing to take her up on it. Maddow is known as a tough interview, but still, she couldn’t find even one Republican in Congress to come on her show tonight – and we all know why.
The Republicans in Congress simply have no idea what to do now that the Trump monster they helped create is finally coming home to roost. Voters are largely blaming Donald Trump for these white supremacist shootings, which means they’re not only going to take it out on Trump at the ballot box in 2020, they’re likely to take it out on Trump’s Republican Party as well.
Republicans in Congress are left with no good options right now. They can run and hide, like they’re doing now, and hope that this all magically goes away before the election. They can step up and denounce Trump for his racism, but just about none of them have shown that kind of courage. Or they can simply not run for reelection, as seven House Republicans have decided in the past two weeks alone. Look for that trend to continue.
