GOP Congressman lashes out at Donald Trump’s idiotic border wall

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Now that Donald Trump’s government shutdown has failed to generate any additional support for his border wall idea, he’s trying the new tactic of offering DACA concessions that aren’t actual concessions in exchange for wall funding. Even as the Democrats reject the offer and Trump’s base fumes at him for even making the offer, some of the least conservative Republicans are now going after Trump from the other direction.

We’ve seen various Republicans in the House and Senate openly call for Donald Trump to reopen the government without any funding for his wall, as they’ve come to realize that it’s a losing issue for their party. But it’s been far more difficult to find any Republicans in Congress willing to flat out admit that the wall is a stupid and ineffective idea. That’s finally changed.

You may recall that Republican Congressman Will Hurd just barely won reelection in 2018 in his district, which sits on the Texas border with Mexico. Hurd has long been a critic of Donald Trump on various issues, and in fact hit Trump hard on Russia last summer. Now Hurd is acknowledging that Trump’s claims about the border are a “myth” and that the wall proposal is a “third-century solution to a 21st-century problem.” So what’s going on here?

Will Hurd has surely figured out that if he wants any chance of being reelected in his district as it comes ever closer to turning blue, he’s got to hit Donald Trump harder than ever. Hurd is wrong on a number of other issues, and his district can surely do better by replacing him with a liberal Democrat in 2020. But it’s a big deal that a GOP Congressman is finally flat-out calling Trump’s wall stupid; we all know what happens after someone finally admits that the emperor has no clothes.
