GOP caught trying to bury additional sexual misconduct allegations against Brett Kavanaugh
Tonight we saw Deborah Ramirez come forward, via Ronan Farrow and Jane Mayer, with accusations of sexual misconduct against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Shortly afterward we saw multiple witnesses come forward, via Michael Avenatti, wanting to testify that Kavanaugh participated in multiple gang rapes. These scandals are so shocking and horrifying, a key aspect of the story is being overlooked: the GOP actively worked to bury at least some of this.
By now we know the story of how Dr. Christine Blasey Ford wrote a letter to Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein, spelling out her attempted rape accusation against Brett Kavanaugh. In the days since Feinstein revealed the letter and Ford subsequently went public, certain Senate Republicans have done everything they can to harass and/or discredit Ford. Now it turns out that in the case of Deborah Ramirez, the Senate Republicans opted for a different kind of villainy.
Farrow and Mayer are reporting that last week, Senate Republicans learned about Ramirez’s accusations. How did they respond? They “issued renewed calls to accelerate the timing of a committee vote.” In other words, they tried to bury it by ramming Kavanaugh through before it could become public and sink the nomination.
So now we know that the Republican Senators attempted to withhold critical and potentially criminal information about their Supreme Court nominee from the public. Now we’ve reached the point where Brett Kavanaugh is being separately accused of being a serial gang rapist. This nomination is all but dead; it’s just a matter of how and when it bites the dust. It’s difficult to imagine that Kavanaugh manages to avoid going to prison. And the Republicans just handed voters yet another reason to trounce them in the November elections.
