Good news for the Democrats in the Georgia Senate runoffs
While Donald Trump is still throwing his post-election tantrum, he’s causing Republicans to sound the alarm about the Georgia runoffs. Calling publicly for Republicans to protest vote against Senators Perdue and Loeffler has only made it clear to the GOP that Trump isn’t on their side unless there’s something in it for him. That’s why he’s now publicly admitting that he regrets supporting Brian Kemp and ridiculing him for not miraculously calling the election in Trump’s favor and not cancelling the election and just declaring Perdue and Loeffler the winners.
Not only are these optics terrible for them – it’s about as blatantly un-American as we’ve seen Republicans get in recent years. Anyone running their campaigns ought to try and keep them out of sight as much as possible, but their Tuesday night fundraiser is pretty much the opposite of that – they’ll be accompanied by Lindsey Graham and Mitch McConnell and there’s likely to be a whole bunch of embarrassing details to leak afterward.
The good news is that things are looking up for their opponents, Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff. A new poll shows Warnock leading Loeffler by seven points – a pretty strong lead out of the margin of error and roughly what he beat Loeffler by on election night, suggesting consistent support. Jon Ossoff is also boasting a slight lead over David Perdue, who has now decided to run commercials that brag about him being “totally exonerated” – not exactly the best way to brush off accusations of corruption that keep on coming.
The polling in Georgia was fairly accurate in the presidential election with Joe Biden’s slight advantage – but polls in special elections have a track record of being less dependable than usual. We need to do everything we can to drive up voter registration in Georgia and have until December 5 to do it. If you haven’t already, please donate or volunteer for their senatorial campaigns and let’s flip the Senate blue on January 5. You can donate to Ossoff and Warnock here.
