Good news for the Democratic Party
The prevailing narrative over the past year has been that the Democrats are in disarray and are doomed in the midterms. This narrative gets a lot of play because it drives ratings – but it’s kind of difficult to find any factual basis for it.
Multiple recent polls show the Democrats having a five point advantage over the Republicans in the generic midterm ballot. Now the Democratic Party has announced this: “The DNC raised over $54 million so far this year–the most at this point in any midterm year. We had our best midterm April for grassroots fundraising ever. Our record fundraising success is going to making historic investments earlier in the midterm cycle than ever before.”
So much for the narratives about the Democrats being doomed or in disarray. Instead what we’re actually seeing is a Democratic Party that’s heading into the midterms with a lead in the polls and historically large small-dollar donations. The Democrats still need you to put in the work when it comes to volunteering and such. This will be a close race, and close races always come down to which side puts in the most work. But the numbers reveal that the Democrats are in a far more competitive midterm position than the popular narratives would suggest.
