George Santos goes off the deep end as Jim Jordan Speaker bid unravels
Jim Jordan is still supposedly going to force a third round of voting for Speaker of the House in the morning, but his bid appears to be unraveling. One House Republican said tonight that it’s “over” for him while another said that Jordan is “done.” Speaking of being done, that brings us to George Santos.
George Santos, whose claim to fame is that he has more felony charges pending against him (23) than his party has had votes for Speaker of the House this year (17), is very staunchly on Jim Jordan’s team. Except maybe he’s not.
On Wednesday, Santos declared on Twitter that “I’m ONLY voting for Jim Jordan.” Then also on Wednesday, Santos declared on Twitter that “if the nasty hatred and attacks against some of my colleagues continue I will be joining them in protest” against Jim Jordan. Wait, what?
You have to wonder what’s going on behind the scenes. Is it possible that Jordan got Santos’ support by promising to keep him from being expelled, but now Santos no longer thinks Jordan can come through for him? Or is Santos just being as randomly unstable as ever?
In any case, one of the many side benefits of Jim Jordan failing to become Speaker is that it would certainly increase the odds that Santos does indeed get expelled. If House Republicans have to settle for a compromise Speaker of some kind, then there will be no need for Santos’ vote any more, and thus no need to keep him around.
