Every former U.S. First Lady tells Donald Trump to go to hell

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Last night Laura Bush published a scathing takedown of Donald Trump and his policy of taking immigrant kids from their parents and locking them in cages. She blamed him for being “immoral” and “cruel.” It was a stunning development, not only because Laura Bush has generally tried to be non-controversial over the years, and because she’s the only living Republican former First Lady of the United States. She was the right First Lady to fire the first salvo, and now it’s quickly become unanimous.

Last night Laura Bush tweeted a link to her op-ed and added this: “I live in a border state. I appreciate the need to enforce and protect our international boundaries, but this zero-tolerance policy is cruel. It is immoral. And it breaks my heart.” Today, Michelle Obama retweeted Laura Bush, adding “Sometimes truth transcends party.”

Hillary Clinton did the same, adding “The test of any nation is how we treat the most vulnerable among us. First Lady Laura Bush made that case eloquently.” Rosalynn Carter released this statement: “The practice and policy today of removing children from their parents’ care at our border with Mexico is disgraceful and a shame to our country.”

This means that every living former First Lady of the United States has now publicly slammed Donald Trump in a period of less than twenty-four hours. We can’t find another instance of anything remotely like this happening in U.S. history. Because the Republican and Democratic First Ladies are unanimously taking the same stand against Donald Trump, no one can accuse any of them of doing so for partisan or political reasons. This is, simply, a matter of who’s a human being and who isn’t.
