If you woke up one day and found out you were in a particularly deep hole, would you focus on trying to figure out how to get out of that hole, or would you focus on convincing yourself that you’re not in a hole? If you’re Donald Trump, it’s consistently the latter – and this time he’s scapegoating his own people for daring to inform him that he’s in a hole.

This past week Donald Trump’s internal 2020 poll numbers leaked to the media, revealing that he’s behind by blowout margins in every key swing state. Trump then insisted that these numbers weren’t real, because in his delusional and narcissistic mind, he can’t be that unpopular. Then new public polling numbers were released which were closely in line with Trump’s leaked internals, helping to confirm that Trump really is on track to get blown out in 2020.

This is the part where any rational person would swallow hard at the bad news, and begin reevaluating their campaign strategy up to this point. If anyone needed to be fired, it would be the people responsible for the bad ideas that put the campaign in a such a hole. But not in Trump’s world.

Donald Trump has to tell himself he’s winning. That means he has to tell himself that his campaign is being run correctly. In turn, he has to tell himself that his own internal polls are wrong. Accordingly, CNN says that the Trump campaign just fired a number of pollsters. That’s right, Trump is scapegoating the people who brought him the bad news, so he can pretend the bad news isn’t real. No wonder Trump is so far behind in the 2020 race. The election is still a very long way away, but Trump is currently running himself into the ground.
