Fiona Hill testifies against Donald Trump
Considering Donald Trump’s lack of interest in listening to his expert advisers, lack of interest in doing his foreign policy homework, lack of interest in anyone who’s told him to be hard on Russia, and worsening lack of cognitive abilities, it’s entirely possible that he doesn’t even remember who Fiona Hill is. But he should – because the former Trump National Security Council official is testifying to the House impeachment inquiry as we speak.
We’re still waiting for more details to emerge about Fiona Hill’s testimony, but by all accounts, she’s expected to testify that she and other Trump administration foreign policy officials fought hard against Donald Trump’s plan to withhold foreign aid as a way of extorting Ukraine into doing his personal bidding. In other words, she’s expected to help establish that Trump was doing something very wrong. Thus far two key points stand out today.
First, CNN’s Manu Raju is reporting that Trump ally Matt Gaetz attempted to participate in the closed door hearing even though he’s not a member of the committee, and Adam Schiff had him thrown out. Apparently Donald Trump’s plan for saving himself at this point is to send people into the room and hope no one notices they don’t belong. Next he’ll have them wearing funny masks.
Second, Fiona Hill’s testimony comes shortly after former U.S. Ambassador and current State Department employee Marie Yovanovitch testified, and shortly before current U.S. Ambassador Gordon Sondland is expected to testify. Donald Trump vowed to block his current and former people from cooperating with the House impeachment inquiry. But he’s clearly unable to stop anyone at this point.
