Finally, a bit of good news in the Manhattan DA criminal case against Donald Trump
Tonight’s newly released Mark Pomerantz resignation letter to Alvin Bragg is actually a bit of good news (no, really). It’s the first official confirmation that the Manhattan DA’s office has Trump nailed on felonies. Now we just have to figure out what the hell’s going on with it.
The part everyone’s overlooking is that after Bragg chased off Pomerantz, Bragg gave the Trump case to his own newly hired gun. The most likely explanation continues to be that Bragg wanted his own handpicked people in charge of the case.
This raises questions about whether Bragg genuinely didn’t like the way the Trump case was built, or if he just wanted his own people running it so he could get full credit for it. Bragg and Pomerantz both have solid histories, so it’s tough to say from the outside.
But if Bragg just wanted to wash his hands of this case, and wanted a scapegoat, he could have just announced that Pomerantz blew the case. But he didn’t do that. He just pushed out Pomerantz and quietly reassigned it to his own handpicked person.
This happens in boardroom power struggles all the time. The new boss brings in his own people and wants existing projects done his own way. The pundits covering this are acting like this is the first time a new boss has ever done such a thing in the history of the world.
This isn’t some attempt at “optimism” on my part (I don’t believe in optimism, and I’m offended when I’m accused of such). It sucks that we have to wait for office politics to play out before Trump is indicted. But at least now we have official confirmation that Trump is nailed – which we didn’t have before.
By the way, the popular narrative that Bragg must have been “bought off” is laughable on its face. If that really were happening, Bragg 1) wouldn’t have been this blatant about it, and 2) would have killed the case and publicly scapegoated Pomerantz, instead of reassigning it. Please stop spreading this nonsense.
Bragg may indeed be guilty of stealing Pomerantz’s hard work so he can take credit for it. But even in such case, you’re not helping (at all) by shouting baseless bribe / blackmail conspiracy theories that don’t even fit the facts. All that does is muddy the waters. Let’s be smarter than this.
