Because the Department of Justice prefers to keep its ongoing criminal investigations as secret as possible, the public is left working with only isolated details such as the recent search and seizure warrants against Donald Trump’s top January 6th henchmen, John Eastman and Jeffrey Clark, to try to figure out how close the DOJ is when it comes to reaching the top of the Trump criminal hierarchy.

But if there’s anyone who might have more of an insider’s sense of what’s going on with the DOJ probe behind the scenes, it would be a federal judge. As multiple observers have pointed out online, judges are in a different branch of the federal government than the DOJ is, judges are assigned to oversee grand jury processes and such.

So it’s interesting, to say the least, that Judge Beryl Howell said this during the recent sentencing of a Capitol attacker: “The government is going to be relentless in finding everyone who was involved in Jan. 6, because it is that important to our democratic process … It might take them some time, but I trust this U.S. Attorney’s office and the prosecutors involved and the FBI agents involved are going to be relentless.”

Given that hundreds of Capitol attackers on the ground (and even the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys leaders who plotted the attack) have already been indicted and arrested, it would seem that Judge Howell is talking about the DOJ’s ongoing effort to get to the very top of the plot. The DOJ seizure warrants against Eastman and Clark strongly point to the DOJ already being in the process of investigating Donald Trump, and this judge seems to think the DOJ is going to get all the way to the top.
